Career Opportunities For Visually Impaired People

Have you ever thought what would you do if you lost your vision? Imagining life without proper vision is extremely terrifying for anybody. On the other hand there are people who have lost their vision and are struggling for various things in life.

What do the statistics say?
According to the National Statistics, more than 75% blind Americans are unemployed and are living on either social security or public assistance. Attempts are continuously being made to bring awareness in the society and among these individuals so that they can also earn a living for their own. There is no doubt in the fact that people who are blind or visually impaired can also lead a normal life, get a respectful job and develop themselves to enhance their skills, grow mentally as well as economically.

Look at it as an opportunity!
While there are several opportunities which people who are visually impaired or blind can take up, one cannot differentiate what work is possible or not. Someone who is completely blind or visually impaired can do any desired job with some reasonable amount of accommodations. Many of us think that there is biasness involved when it comes to providing work to such individuals. This should not be seen as biasness, but should be looked upon as giving an opportunity to someone who wants to do something even though if he/she has a serious problem.

What should they do?
So what are the career prospects for someone who is blind or visually impaired? Well, this basically depends on what they want to do. They can either search for a job or practically start your own business as well. They can become a customer service agent where their would have to coordinate over the phone. If they like to teach new things, then they should become a teacher or a counselor. They can very well become a radio talk show host or a commercial announcer to give voice over. There are various retail jobs where people who are blind or visually impaired can apply and earn a living. One can join the hospitality industry or try becoming a therapist.

Something that may help…
The National Industries has introduced a program called Blind’s Business Leaders Program which helps to prepare individuals to build up a career in business by providing educational as well as employment opportunities. This program augments professional development and helps them to become future business leaders and successful professionals.

There are various online resources which can help in getting an opportunity for such individuals. Organization like National Industries for Blind (NIB) helps people to seek employment throughout the United States. There are special concessions as well that have been made for people with low or no vision.

It is very important for such people to understand not to limit themselves or think that they are inferior from others. Just because someone is blind does not mean they should not be treated the same way as anyone else. All of us have the right to live a happy and fulfilling life with something that we love to do.
